Taking Care of Your Oral Health During Cancer Treatment

A cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, and your dental health may be the last thing on your mind. However, prioritizing your oral health before and during cancer treatment can help prevent infections, paint, emergencies and complications that could interfere with your cancer treatment.

Before Chemotherapy, Radiation and Other Cancer Treatments

If possible, we recommend seeing a dentist as soon as you can after your diagnosis. This allows time to address any dental concerns that may become an issue during your treatment.

Why is this important?

1.     Preventing Infections – Your mouth is home to millions of bacteria. When your immune system is compromised, untreated dental issues like cavities or gum disease can increase your risk of infection. Professional teeth cleaning, Guided Biofilm Therapy, and other recommended treatments can help reduce this risk.

2.     Avoiding Dental Emergencies – Weak or damaged teeth may crack or break, leading to pain and urgent dental visits during treatment. Addressing potential problem areas beforehand can help you avoid unnecessary discomfort or having to put cancer treatment on hold while you address them.

By taking proactive steps, our goal will be to make your cancer treatment journey as smooth and pain-free as possible.

Common Oral Health Concerns During Treatment and How to Manage Them:

Cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation, can cause changes in your mouth. Up to one-third of patients experience side effects that affect their oral health, making it more challenging to brush, floss, and maintain good hygiene. Here are some common ones.

·        Mouth sores, sensitive gums and periodontal disease – These can be painful, but we can recommend soothing rinses, topical treatments, and medications to provide relief.

·        Dry mouth - Some treatments reduce saliva production, which can increase discomfort and the risk of cavities. We may suggest artificial saliva, fluoride rinses, or sugar-free lozenges to keep your mouth hydrated.

·        Mouth acidity, especially if you are vomiting - Stomach acid can weaken your teeth. Rinse your mouth with a mixture of water and a teaspoon of baking soda to help maintain a healthy pH balance.

·        Brushing and flossing are even more important during cancer treatment. – We recommend you use an extra-soft toothbrush, brush gently, and consider fluoride toothpaste to protect against cavities. If flossing is uncomfortable, try a water flosser or floss picks designed for sensitive gums.
