Summers Can Be Hard on Your Teeth

We love summer! It's a time of vacations, barbeques, swimming and all kinds of outdoor fun. Most of us have time off work or school and the ability to spend more time with family and friends enjoying our summer days.

Summer also brings some risks specific to your smile. Here are a few things you can do to keep it healthy while enjoying summer fun.

Protect Your Lips: Using lip balm with SPF 15 or more can prevent sun damage and skin cancer. Your lips are extra vulnerable because their skin is very thin and they are exposed to the sun year round.

Check Swimming Pool Acidity: Chlorine in swimming pools and water parks can be hard on your teeth. If you own a pool, make sure the water PH is not too acidic. You can also protect your teeth by rinsing with drinking water throughout the day and after swimming.  Do not brush your teeth within an hour of pool time as the enamel may still be vulnerable.

Limit Acidic Drinks: When it’s hot out you get thirsty more often and can consume more soda, lemonade, and sweet drinks. All of these are dangerous for tooth enamel. We encourage you to limit these acidic drinks or swish your teeth with drinking water throughout the day to protect them.

Stay Hydrated: Not drinking enough water can cause your mouth to become dry and more susceptible to cavities. Hydration is very important for both your mouth and overall health.

Limit Sugary Treats: The cavity and infection causing bacteria in your mouth love to feed off sugar. Brushing, flossing, or chewing sugarless gum after sweet treats can help protect your teeth. Or, you can focus more on healthy, natural flavors like watermelon and other summer fruits.

Protect Your Teeth from Accidents: If you are being adventurous, playing sports or involved in other activities, be sure to use the appropriate protective gear and use common sense in protecting your teeth. For those of you who do this consistently, please check in with us about getting a sports guard.

Summer is about having fun and with a few simple precautions, you can do it in a way that keeps your smile healthy and happy.
