We all know that eating a lot of candy can lead to cavities. A sugary mouth environment feeds cavity causing bacteria so they can cause more trouble. But it is possible to allow your children to enjoy Halloween, eat some treats and not end up with a mouth full of cavities.
Here are our top 3 tips for handling Halloween treats and finding balance between a fun holiday and staying healthy.
1. Have your kids wait until they are home before eating candy. Sort the candy together and have them pick out their favorites.
2. Have non-candy items like books or toys to trade for the rest. Kids will be happy to go along with this as long as the offered items are things they value more than the candy.
3. Choose specific times for eating Halloween treats. This keeps them from marinating their teeth in sugar all day and works great just before they brush their teeth at night.
And, of course, brushing and flossing are more important than ever!
We hope you and your little ones have a fun Halloween. Stay safe and healthy!
