Oral Bacteria and Inflammation Can Be Dangerous for Your Overall Health

We used to believe that dental care was just about taking care of your teeth and gums, but current studies show that what happens in your mouth can impact the rest of your body. We now know that there is a link between major diseases like Alzheimer’s, heart disease and diabetes and the health of your mouth.

While the exact nature of these links is still being researched, it is believed that there are two primary ways poor oral health can cause disease – inflammation and bacteria.

When your immune system is trying to heal a dental issue, it creates inflammation. Chronic inflammation, like we see with gum disease, is believed to contribute to many dangerous diseases. The other way oral health can impact systemic health is when the bacteria in your mouth travel to other parts of your body. This can happen when you swallow, breathe, or when they are absorbed through the thin tissue of your mouth.

Medical conditions related to poor dental health include:

·        Heart disease and stroke

·        Diabetes

·        Respiratory disease

·        Pre-term birth and low birth weight babies

·        Cancer

·        Alzheimer’s and dementia

·        Arthritis

·        Osteoporosis

·        And, more

With the links between all of these health conditions and oral health becoming increasingly clear, taking care of your mouth is even more important. If you have periodontal disease, gingivitis, biofilm or an unbalanced microbiome in your mouth, seeing your dentist should be a part of your plan for better health.

Our goal is to help you keep your mouth as healthy as possible. One of the ways we do this is with Guided Biofilm Therapy, a new technology that allows us to keep your mouth at it’s healthiest and minimize dangerous biofilm bacteria.

If you have any concerns about your dental health or are living with a condition like heart disease, dementia or diabetes, we encourage you to give us a call.

We promise to take great care of you!
