How to Protect Tooth Enamel

Tooth enamel is the hard outer surface that is meant to protect the inner parts of your teeth. It is what we see when we look at your smile and even though it is incredibly strong it can be damaged by things like bacteria, plaque and acids in your mouth.

Loss of tooth enamel, often called erosion, can lead to cavities, additional damage, sensitive teeth, staining and even infection. Lost tooth enamel cannot be regenerated or replaced, but damaged enamel can be restored and even prevented. Some of the factors that may lead to tooth erosion include:

  • Drinking sodas, juices, and other sugary drinks
  • A diet high in sugar and simple carbohydrates
  • Eating acidic foods
  • Acid reflux, GERD, or similar digestive issues
  • Grinding or clenching your teeth
  • Bulimia
  • Dry mouth conditions
  • Environmental exposure to acids, like in swimming pools
  • Genetics or medications
  • Lack of dental care - brushing, flossing and regular dental visits

Keeping your enamel strong is important for having healthy teeth, beautiful smiles and to prevent potential dental problems. We encourage you to look at the causes listed above and make changes where you can.

  • Minimize sugar and acid in what you eat and drink
  • Use toothpaste with fluoride, as it helps re-mineralize your teeth
  • Drink a lot of water to rinse your teeth after sugary or acidic foods and keep your mouth moist. Let us know if your mouth feels chronically dry as we may be able to help.
  • If you have a pool, test the PH regularly before your family swims in it.
  • If you might be grinding or clenching your teeth, let us know. You may benefit from a nightguard appliance, realignment, or other treatment.
  • Brush and floss daily and keep your family up to date with all dental visits.

Your tooth enamel is a precious resources and our mission is to help you keep it healthy and strong. We have tools and resources that can help, so please let us know if you have questions or concerns.

We are here to help.
