Dog kisses are just so cute. What possible harm could they do?
We checked out some of the scientific research and the news is not good.
There have been several studies where the saliva and plaque of dogs and their owners have been tested. It seems they shared more than a home. A high percentage of the human participants had a mouth full of doggie bacteria, including the kind that causes periodontal gum disease.
Scientists also were concerned about other contagious bacteria that was likely picked up from licking or eating pretty gross stuff. These were the germs that could make you sick. We won’t go into details here, but you can only imagine where your dog’s mouth has been.
No matter how cute your dog is, kissing them could be unhealthy, especially for young children, seniors, or anyone with a compromised immune system.
Your dog can be re-trained by saying no and reinforcing other behavior. It will be better for both of you in the end.
