Acid reflux, also called heartburn and GERD, is something most of us are familiar with. It happens when the acids used to digest food in your digestive system escape into your esophagus, throat and mouth. The symptoms can range from minor burping to serious, painful and life-threatening damage to your inner tissues.
Symptoms to look out for include a burning sensation, chest pain, chronic cough or sore throat, difficulty swallowing, or feeling like you have a lump in your throat. If you have a burning or acidic feeling in your mouth, your oral health may be in danger too.
The two main concerns about acid reflux and oral health are:
Tooth Erosion: The exposure to acid can eat away at your tooth enamel, impacting the appearance of your smile and putting your teeth at risk for cavities, gum recession and other dental problems.
Esophageal Cancer: Acid damages tissue as it travels through your throat and this can lead to throat or mouth cancer, which are known to be dangerous and deadly.
If you have any symptoms of acid reflux or GERD, it is important to see your medical doctor for treatment and let your dentist know, as well.
When it comes to your teeth and health, there is no such thing as just a little heartburn.
