Dental emergencies are never convenient and can often be painful. They can also be scary, especially if you don't know what to do. We hope that this guide can serve as a resource in case something happens to you or someone around you.
5 Common Dental Emergencies and What to Do When They Happen
Knocked Out Tooth
- Hold the tooth by the top and try not to touch the roots. If it's dirty, rinse it very gently with water.
- Try to put the tooth back in place very carefully and gently. Do not push or force it.
- If it won't easily go back into place, hold it in your mouth or put it in a glass of milk.
- Go to a dentist or oral surgeon immediately. There is a good chance that the tooth can be saved if you do.
Crown Falls Off
- Inspect the crown to see if there is a piece of tooth inside and if dirty, clean it gently.
- Try to put it back in place very carefully.
- If it fits on you can temporarily place it by coating your tooth with toothpaste, denture adhesive or dental cement. There are special kits for this available at most drug stores. Do not use glue and do not do this if it feels loose and you think you might swallow it.
- Schedule a dental appointment as soon as possible and be sure to take the crown with you.
Filling Falls Out
- You can temporarily put chewing gum or dental cement into the hole where the filling was to provide insulation and protect the area.
- Call your dentist as soon as possible.
Chipped or Broken Tooth
- Save and rinse any broken pieces.
- Rinse your mouth out with warm water.
- Contact your dental office as soon as possible.
Toothache or Tooth Pain
- Use dental floss to gently clean the area, if possible.
- Rinse your mouth with warm water.
- If you have swelling, put a cold compress against your cheek.
- Take over the counter pain medication, if needed.
- Contact your dentist as soon as possible.
In an ideal world there wouldn't be any dental emergencies and they can be prevented with regular dental care. But, if something happens, we hope this information helps you feel confident and prepared to take good care of yourself.
